What is the difference between creativity and innovation? Discuss how you might need both as an entrepreneur.
Creativity and innovation are alike on many levels, but their end results are very different. Creativity is more of a mental process which involves thinking up new ideas that may or may not be created into a finished product later on. These ideas may be brand new or based off of previous concepts. Innovation is actually applying those ideas into a new way of doing something, such as introducing new methods or devices. Both of these traits are vital to entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurs are always at risk to be taken over by another company. This company may take the entrepreneur's original concept and make it into something better which would squash the chances of the entrepreneur's design ever being successful in the market. Therefor the entrepreneur needs to be constantly inspired and thinking up of new ideas for his venture or ways to improve an existing concept.
Innovation is what sets one entrepreneur apart from the other. Both may have great ideas but whether or not those ideas can be transformed into something useful will make or break the success. If an entrepreneur can successfully enter brand new product which changes the way people do things, that is innovation at work with creativity.

Abbey summed this one up nicely. It will certainly be necessary to utilize both of these skills to varying degrees in almost any occupation one chooses to enter, and especially in any entrepreneurial ventures.
ReplyDeleteI think of both creativity and innovation as ways of problem solving. While creativity can mean creating an amazing piece of artwork, designing a building, or writing a song, sometimes its simpler than that. The need for creativity comes up all the time. Creativity could mean coming up with a new way to redistribute the budget in a time of economic decline. This is a vital creative skill for an entrepreneur.
Innovation involves solving a problem by filling a gap. There have been a lot of great creative people out there, but they're inability to innovate held them back. This happens throughout history, including in music (which is my major). Sometimes, an artist would write a great song. But another singer would come along who could present it in a more appealing manner. They sold more records, and popularized the song. An example is Ray Charles, who popularized the style of R&B, combining gospel with blues music. He was an innovator, and an entrepreneur, presenting himself as the product.

creativity must be a step (whether it is buy the inventor or someone else) in order to ultimately have a successful innovation.
